How A Compost Pile Should Be Maintained

How A Compost Pile Should Be MaintainedThe substrate chemistry of a compost pile is the main cause of biological activity in a compost pile. So, it is very important to understand this important aspect before you start to compost your kitchen scraps. The chemicals that are present in a compost pile will be more than enough to control the microbes and the activity level of the rest of the organisms.Chemical composition is very important since the stability of a compost pile will depend on it. The chemical composition and its utilization for use as an environment for microbial activities can be described as follows. There are two basic types of chemical compositions that are present in a compost pile, namely, alkaline and acidic.Alkaline chemical composition is the type which has a high acidity. This type of chemical composition includes alkaline material such as peat, manure and charcoal. So, it has high acidity and hence the presence of many microbes. However, in order to maintain th e pH level in a compost pile, there must be a balance between the acidity and alkalinity.Acidic chemical composition is the type which has a high alkalinity. It is a good thing for the microbes in a compost pile, since it has a low acidity. It also maintains the pH level and the activity level of the other microbial organisms. So, this means that if the chemicals in a compost pile are not maintained, the activity level will be affected. The chemical composition of a compost pile includes a lot of materials like for example, organic matter and animal products. In order to maintain the acidity of the pile, acid is added to the pile. For maintaining the alkalinity, some water is added.Another important aspect that needs to be understood is the substrate chemistry. In simple terms, the substrate chemistry can be described as the basic chemical substance from which the microbes live and develop. The substrates include different sources, mostly food materials. These sources include manure, coffee grounds, fruit residues, cheese, pasta, old banana peelings, and various other substances. Each of these different kinds of substrates can be classified as either being acidic or alkaline. The reason for the pH level to change is that they have either too much or too little acid or alkalinity. One of the consequences of changing the substrate chemistry is that the activities of the microorganisms are also changed. This means that these microorganisms might be more active than before or even less active.

No matter how good your other credentials, youre not getting in that door without proof of a certain language level. In Germany, for instance, many university programs require proof of a C1 level. Universities in China generally require about the sameâ€"around an  HSK 5 level, to be exact. And if youd like to live and work in another country, chances are youre going to have to demo nstrate your language ability with a certificate of some sort.In Japan, if you manage to pass the JLPT N1, you prove to the government that youre able to use Japanese at an extremely high level and easily function in the business world. That goes a long way towards getting you a coveted skilled worker visa. But say, what is the JLPT N1 anyway? Read on to find out!5 of the Worlds Most Useful Language CertificatesBelow are five of the worlds most recognized and useful certifications for languages. These arent by any means all the language exams that exist, so dont feel distressed if you dont see your target language represented or are interested in other options. There are many other tests to measure language proficiency, including the DSH for German and the TOEFL for English, but this list covers a broad range of languages and should be helpful for seeing useful examples of whats out there.JLPT  (Japanese)The Japanese Language Proficiency Test measures ability from N5 (basic) to N1 (ad vanced). People who pass the N1 are said to have about the same linguistic ability as a native high school graduate. Its offered at testing centers around the world, though usually only once or twice per year. There are three sections: Language Knowledge (vocabulary and grammar), Reading and Listening. You wont have to produce any written essays, nor will you have to sit through a spoken interviewâ€"but dont let your guard down.Just around 30 percent of applicants on average pass the N1 exam each year. So when you try for this Japanese certificate, make sure you can talk the talk and walk the walk.DELE  (Spanish)The Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language is administered by the Instituto Cervantes in Spain as a measure of European Spanish proficiency. In the past few years, the Instituto Cervantes has worked with test centers in Mexico to design a more international test known as the SIELE, but the DELE still has a powerful presence. There are more than 1,000 test centers worldwide !When you apply for the DELE, you need to pick one of the six CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) levels from A1 to C2 as your test level. Each test has four sections that cover listening, reading, writing and speaking.DELF/DALF (French)Just like the DELE, these two exams are based on the CEFR scale of language proficiency. If you sign up for levels A1 through B2, youll apply for the DELF (Diplôme détudes en langue française). At the C levels, the name simply changes to DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française). These French certificates are organized almost exactly like the DELE in Spanish. You simply sign up at any one of the hundreds of locations around the world.Passing the C2 French exam is no walk in the park, but once you do youll be eligible for all kinds of benefits such as employment in the Francophonie, a job as a teacher or translator and access to French-language higher education.HSK (Mandarin Chinese)The Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, or Mandari n proficiency exam, is well-known all over China. There are six levels of the test, ranging from knowledge of just a few hundred words and characters to many more. Unlike some other exams, there are freely available vocabulary lists published for each level.Theres also no speaking sectionâ€"you have to sign up for the separate HSK speaking exam if you want proof of oral Chinese proficiency. But once youve passed HSK 5, youll be able to take ordinary Chinese classes surrounded by native speakers. And by HSK 6, youll have no problem reading or understanding Chinese that you see and hear around you every day.TELC (several languages)The European Language Certificates (TELC) is a German organization that offers a smorgasbord of languages and certificates to choose from. For major world languages like English and Spanish, youll be able to sit exams rated at any of the CEFR levels.Other languages, like Arabic or Polish, are just as important but dont yet have one unified exam like the DELE or HSK. In this case, TELC also offers a limited selection of exams at the intermediate level that can serve as an important benchmark for your skills. The exams are held in thousands of test centers worldwide, and the results are accepted as valid in just as many places. As a German company, TELC  works especially closely with the governments and businesses in the German-speaking regions of Europeâ€"so if youre looking to study or do business in these places, TELC  may be a perfect option for you.How to Prepare for a Language Certificate ExamTake a Look at Previous ExamsExam agencies often publish mock exams, older questions or practice tests for you to prepare. Some are in book form, and some are even online.  DIALANG is a great one-stop resource for finding practice tests in a ton of languages. Theyre modeled after the standard exams used in Europe like the DALF and DELE. Your results here are likely to be a good diagnostic for what level exam you should take.Another way to find exa ms is by checking the websites of test centers or places that offer exam prep classes. Heres an example from the HSK center at the University of Manchester. If you dont know what youre going to be tested on, youre probably not going to do well. As much as the designers of the test try to make it reflect real-world language use, its necessarily going to be a little bit artificial for the purposes of grading. Thus, just having a high level in your target language never guarantees a solid score. You need to be prepared for each exam section in turnâ€"and, of course, youll need to know how to follow the exam instructions in the target language!Read Nonfiction Articles from Different SourcesThe reading portion of standardized language exams is almost always nonfiction. Fiction reading is extremely important for your vocabulary development, but when you study for a test you need to get used to the type of writing youll encounter on that test. That means you should be extremely comfortable rea ding easy news articles in your target language, such as  those found on news sites like NHK World in many languages. But beyond just news, you should be able to read different types of nonfiction. Can you follow the main arguments of opinion pieces? How about understanding the flow of step-by-step instructions or the pros and cons in a product review? These are just a few of the writing genres we encounter every day in our native languages. If you want to excel at the reading comprehension sectionâ€"a component of every examâ€"you’ll need to be familiar with all of these and more.Ditch Your HeadphonesThis is a small tip, but it might end up making all the difference in your exam preparation. When we sit down to study languages at home, more often than not we use headphones or earbuds. And why not? Theyre comfortable, the sound is clear and theres no risk of bothering others. But if youre used to having your target language piped cleanly into your ears all day, you might start to sweat when you see a cheap boombox at the exam center.Although all the exam centers prepare the same test for you, the conditions for the listening part can be completely haphazard. Its entirely possible that youll be asked to do the listening exam in an echo-y room with construction going on outside.Practicing your listening with computer speakers in a variety of environments will get you prepared for whatever conditions the examiners throw at you.Fine-tune Your Writing with a TutorWhen was the last time you challenged yourself to write something difficult in your target language? Its not something self-learners often do.And in fact, its actually not necessary for all the exams I mentioned or all the exams out there. At lower and intermediate levels, the JLPT and HSK dont test your composition skills at allâ€"the writing section of those exams is multiple choice. But the fact remains that for an advanced language certificate, you had better be able to write well in your target language.T he best way to study writing is to write and get feedback. Some people are lucky enough to have good friends or colleagues that can give them tips on their writing.Even better than that, though, is a tutor who has successfully coached exam candidates in the past. You want a tutor with a proven track record in getting students the language certificates they want. Now that youve taken a look at some of the major language certificates out there, what do you think?Do you want to join the ranks of millions of people around the world who have sat and passed exams in their target languageâ€"proving their ability to themselves and others?Theres no better time than now to start preparing.Get your hands on a copy of a practice exam, read some online articles, browse through some tutor listingsâ€"and be on your way to your first language certificate of many.

The 50 Biggest Tutoring Cities in the U.S.

The 50 Biggest Tutoring Cities in the U.S. Tutorz.com researched its database to determine the biggest tutoring cities in the United States. To accomplish this objective we compare the population of the top 50 U.S. cities with the number of requests for personal tutoring for all subjects ranging from math, over English to essay writing. Information about personal tutor requests originates from Tutorz’ database and is bound by the years 2007 and 2010. The ranking of U.S. cities by population is based on a Wikipedia publication. The table below ranks the top 10 U.S. cities by the number of requests for private tutors and compares it with the city’s rank by population. City Rank by Tutoring Referrals City Rank by Population New York, NY 1 1 Houston, TX 2 4 Los Angeles, CA 3 2 Chicago, IL 4 3 Indianapolis, IN 5 12 Atlanta, GA 6 40 Dallas, TX 7 9 Brooklyn, NY 8 Miami, FL 9 44 San Jose, CA 10 10 Not surprisingly New York is number one by tutoring requests and population. Tutorz.com referred in New York City alone 371 private tutors to students seeking help with homework. New York is also the most populated city in the U.S. with 8.4 million citizens approximately. Also noteworthy, education is one of New York’s bigger industries facilitated by notable private universities such as Columbia University, New York University, and Pace University. Rank 2nd, 3rd and 4th is held by Los Angeles, CA, Chicago, IL and Houston, TX. For these 3 cities, the tutoring rank agrees approximately with the population rank. These cities are the home of renowned universities including University of California at Los Angeles, University of Chicago and Rice University Houston). At rank 5 we have the first big surprise: Indianapolis, IN is ranked 5 by tutoring while only the 12th largest city. This result might be explained with the number of fine universities in Indianapolis (incl. Purdue University, University of Indianapolis, and Butler University). Another attempt to explain this result is to theorize that the citizens of Indianapolis place higher value on education or have recognized the substantial benefits of tutoring. Lastly, we admit that the Tutorz’ data is biased towards areas of higher marketing activity, although no special emphasis was place to Indianapolis in past marketing campaigns. The next surprise is Atlanta, GA being ranked 6th by tutoring. With a population of about 420,000 Atlanta scores place 40 in Wikipedia. Perhaps the Georgia State University or Clark Atlanta University has helped to boost Atlanta’s rank. But without a doubt Tutorz partner website, www.sapioadvisors.com a local tutoring company has helped to let Atlanta fly high in ranks. On place 7 we record another Texas city Dallas, TX. The rank of Dallas agrees roughly with its rank by population (9th). Brooklyn, NY is ranked 8th. Technically Brooklyn is a part of New York City and thus not featured in Wikipedia’s rank by population. But nice parents and students prefer to look for tutors in Brooklyn rather than New York we list it here separately. Note, if Brooklyn were a city it would be the home of more than 2 million people. Miami, FL holds rank 9 by tutoring but is according to Wikipedia only the 44th largest U.S. city. This surprising result can be theorized with the same arguments as for Indianapolis, IN. And finally, San Jose, CA maintains rank 10 in both the Tutorz database and Wikipedia publication. Is your city not among the top 10? Look at the table below. It ranks the top 50 U.S. cities by the number of requests for private tutors and compares it with the city’s rank by population. City Rank by Tutoring Referrals City Rank by Population New York, NY 1 1 Houston, TX 2 4 Los Angeles, CA 3 2 Chicago, IL 4 3 Indianapolis, IN 5 12 Atlanta, GA 6 40 Dallas, TX 7 9 Brooklyn, NY 8 Miami, FL 9 44 San Jose, CA 10 10 Kansas City, MO 11 37 Baltimore, MD 12 21 Phoenix, AZ 13 6 Boston, MA 14 22 Sacramento, CA 15 35 Denver, CO 16 26 Philadelphia, PA 17 5 Austin, TX 18 14 Irvine, CA 19 96 Anaheim, CA 20 54 San Diego, CA 21 8 Alexandria, VA 22 177 Northridge, CA 23 Milwaukee, WI 24 28 Washington, DC 25 24 Cincinnati, OH 26 62 Fremont, CA 28 95 Encino, CA 29 Baton Rouge, LA 30 85 Cleveland, OH 31 45 Minneapolis, MN 32 48 Memphis, TN 33 20 Las Vegas, NV 34 30 Seattle, WA 35 23 Gainesville, FL 36 202 Nashville, TN 37 25 Orlando, FL 38 79 Albany, NY 39 Oxnard, CA 40 113 Tampa, FL 41 55 Detroit, MI 42 18 San Antonio, TX 43 7 Portland, OR 44 29 Fort Lauderdale, FL 45 141 Tucson, AZ 46 33 Charlotte, NC 47 17 Fort Worth, TX 48 16 Salt Lake City, UT 49 49 New Haven, CT 50 189 Overall the rank by tutoring agrees overall with the rank by population. There are a few exceptions, however. The cities of Irvine, CA and Northridge CA are both ranked substantially higher by tutoring than by population. They hold in common that the founders of Tutorz.com have studied at both universities and created some awareness about the Tutorz in the local population. At UC Irvine Tutorz.com was the winner of the HiTech Octane Computing Competition and at CSUN (Northridge) Prof. Dye of the Math department became a supporter of the website. Oxnard, CA ranked 113 by population let’s eye brows rise by being ranked 40 by tutoring. After all, Oxnard is mostly an agricultural community on a plane in California’s Ventura County. Yet again, this aberration in rank can be easily explained by the fact that Tutorz.com is headquartered in the nearby (small) town of Port Hueneme, CA. Finally, Cleveland, OH is ranked 14 places higher by tutoring than by population. Tutorz has targeted Cleveland, OH as one of its keywords in the SEO campaign. As we can see these efforts have paid off. In summary, a city’s number of requests for private tutors correlates with its population size. A number of cities rank notably higher by tutoring (Indianapolis, Miami) and we are hard-pressed to provide a reasonable explanation for aberration. Other exceptional cities (Oxnard, Irvine, Northridge) rank higher due to Tutorz’ personal relationship with these locations.

5 Tips to Manage School Stress

5 Tips to Manage School Stress School can be a stressful place for any child. Often going back to school after a half-term break or a long holiday can be hard for a child. Getting back into a routine, knowing they will have homework and early nights again can make a child feel stressed. Expectations of children are higher than ever before and let's be honest, if your child is stressed out then you are going to be stressed out too. There are plenty of ways to alleviate stress for both yourself and your child. Here are five tips to help you keep those stress levels at bay. 1. Be an understanding parent As parents we want the best for our children and sometimes we think that by adding a little pressure we will get them to work harder. Encouraging your child to do the best they can is great but if they don't get the grades they, or you, were expecting there is no need to get angry. As long as you know they have tried their best that is all that matters. Also, your child may be complaining about having to go to school. They may be having problems understanding homework they have been set or not coping with their maths work. Listen to your child and try to get to the root of any problems calmly. If they are struggling with their work you could always sit and try and work it through with them and if that isn't enough you could seek the help of a private tutor. Your child could be having issues with bullying or with a teacher that they feel 'doesn't like them'. If you know the problem you will be able to deal with it more efficiently and if your child feels that you understand what they are going through you'll be able to deal with things in a much more understanding way. 2. Make sure kids are in bed at a reasonable time Children need sleep to be able to fully function and it is recommended that they have a good ten hours sleep through the night. By ensuring your children have a good bedtime routine not only are you making sure they reap the benefits of a proper nights sleep but you will also have some wind-down time of your own before heading off to make sure you get a good eight hours sleep. Having a structured bedtime during the week will ensure your child gets into a good routine and as long as you stick to it they will get used to the same time each night being bedtime. Make sure your child finishes any homework or school preparation with plenty of time to relax before they head off for the night. 3. Laugh with your children Laughter really is the best way to alleviate stress. Laughing out loud increases oxygen and blood flow which reduces stress levels. Laughing is easy; tell some jokes, watch a funny TV program together or even have a tickling session! And the great thing with laughter is that is rather infectious. Watching your children laugh lightens your heart and takes away both their and your stresses. 4. Enjoy music In the same way laughter alleviates stress so does music. Just listening to some music together with your child can break down those stress barriers. Putting on some fun music and dancing around the lounge or playing some fun karaoke tunes to see who can belt out Grease's 'Summer Nights' the best will have you both relaxing and shaking off any stress you both may have from the day. 5. Go back to a time without technology Phones, tablets, i-pads, computers and television have taken over our lives like never before. If you are not on social media 'liking' your friends latest picture of their chihuahua, you'll be playing 'words with friends' with a stranger from New Zealand. And at the same time your child will probably be posting their latest Selfie on Facebook, creating ridiculous pictures on Snapchat or playing Mine-craft with their friends. I am shocked at the growing number of toddlers skilfully swiping their fingers over a screen. Technology can often bring on more stress than we realise and take away quality family time. Exercise is a great way of relieving stress and can be fun too. Try taking some time-out from all your gadgets and spend some quality time with your children. A nice walk to the park, a family game of football, a fun board game or just some good conversation will not only mean spending some quality family time it can help melt away stresses and fill your home with a calm and peaceful atmosphere. To conclude Children and stress do not have to go hand-in-hand. The best way to help your child is to be supportive and a good role-model. If your child can see that the stress isn't getting to you it will be a lot easier for them to fight the stress away too, leaving the home (and school) environment a more peaceful one.

Could access to such ‘rich’ music have been the barrier to mainstream society enjoying such treasures all along?Filming the greatest musicals was the perfect way to level the playing field. Now, rather than Tony Award-winning shows running only in major cities’ culture centres, stories set to music can reach every part of the country, first in cinemas and, with the advent of home entertainment systems, in privat e homes.Your Superprof now takes a look at some of the greatest titles ever featured on stage that found their way into cinema… and/or your television. Image by ?? ? from PixabayBefore we explore the glorious period of musicals staged from the 1940s to the 60s â€" what is known as the Golden Age (of Broadway, typically), we present a few facts.Music has been a part of theatre for as long as societies have had theatres.Operas and operetta are musical shows but differ from musicals in several waysMusical theater as we know it has been around since the mid-1800sCertain elements were born of Gilbert and Sullivan’s genius in Britain and by Harrigan and Hart in the USIn the UK, Edwardian musical comedies picked up where Gilbert and Sullivan left offDuring the First World War, New York’s Broadway theater took the lead in musical productionAround that time, New York City became the cultural centre of the western hemisphere and has remained so ever since. That is why the Golden Age of Musicals typically refers to shows that ran on that illustrious stage as well as off-Broadway, the Lincoln Center and other houses in the New York’s theatre district. That era happened to coincide with new technologies in the film industry. After several stops and starts, ‘the talkies’ as sound film was called replaced silent film, opening up the medium to more expressive presentations that included singing. In cinematic terms, by the 1940s, the stage was set for lavish musicals. One musical film you may be familiar with is The Wizard of Oz. It was filmed in 1939 but it wasn’t until it was re-released 10 years later that it became a hit. It took that long for the American musical to catch on with cinema-going audiences.Another film of that era that was wildly popular with American audiences is Oklahoma! - which firmly placed the writing team of Rodgers and Hammerstein at the forefront of the musical film wave.Their next two big titles, State Fair and Meet Me in Saint Louis could be described as cut from the same cloth but their later contributio ns â€" Cinderella and The Sound of Music firmly established their legacy as one of musical theatre’s greatest writing teams. So accomplished are they that their work has garnered no fewer than 34 Tony Awards and 15 Academy Awards!Footnote: naturally, there were many shows prior to this era of Broadway musicals â€" Show Boat and No, No Nanette among them. Both of those were made into films, as were many others that ran before movie studios’ emergence as the prime entertainment factory. Now, for a theatre quiz question: what are book musicals? Exquisitely choreographed, The Phantom remains a perennial favourite on stage and in film Image by Ahmad Ardity from PixabayAndrew Lloyd WebberWhile the likes of Irving Berlin, Lerner and Loewe and the above-mentioned songwriting duo of Rodgers and Hammerstein were revolutionising musical theatre in the US, our Andrew Lloyd Webber’s work was setting fire to stages all over West London (not literally, of course). He was still a teenager when he was introduced to his longtime collaborator, Tim Rice. Their first effort was The Likes of Us, a musical about a philanthropist who opened homes for poor children.Although the show is well-received today, in 1965 they couldn’t find any backers - sponsors who would help them stage it. Undaunted, they moved on to other projects. They enjoyed a measure of commercial success with other collaborations but it wasn’t until Jesus Christ Superstar that the duo became a household name. The 1973 film of the same name was more of a film in the true sens e â€" shot on location in Israel but the updated 2000 video release was more like the stage show. Of course, both versions incorporated the fantastic music. And the hits continue…Cats was nothing if not a phenomenon on stage, breaking box offices worldwide and smashing records for the longest run of any stage show. The film version was released direct-to-video in 1998, nearly 20 years after its debut at the New London Theatre. The string of hits caused some theatre aficionados to aver that Baron Lloyd Webber is the master of the concept musical but it was Cats that ushered in the era of the mega-musical.Of all the music and shows that Lloyd Webber contributed to, perhaps none is more renown than The Phantom of the Opera. Like so many of his other shows, this story has its roots in literature; a French novel written by Gaston Leroux.Again, there were nearly 20 years between The Phantom’s stage debut at Her Majesty’s Theatre in West End and the film’s release. Some tend to think o f Broadway shows as the alpha and omega of music theatre. Clearly, those who think so overlook the theatrical genius of Great Britain’s Andrew Lloyd Webber!Join the discussion: are jukebox musicals theatre gold or a lazy shortcut?Disney MusicalsWhen one mentions they are going to buy tickets to see the latest musical comedy, a Disney film is not exactly what springs to mind.In fact, Disney has been on the film musical bandwagon pretty much since the genre’s inception; their very first animated feature film was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.Surely you remember tunes such as Whistle While You Work and Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho, right?Because they are animated works, people tend to categorise them as children’s entertainment, which they are designed to be but, if you think about it, many Disney films are musicals.Take The Lion King, for example. It is Disney’s 32nd full-length animated film. Memorable and evocative, it capably carries on that studio’s tradition of weaving music into an engaging storyline. Not all of Disney Studios output of that time was animated. Think Mary Poppins and Beauty and the Beast â€" a story they apparently liked so much that they made both an animated and live-action version of.Because so many Disney songs become mainstream pop hits (Let it Go, anyone?), you might be tempted to think that many of their musical films should be categorised as pop/rock musicals… that would not be correct! Some of Disney's film musicals have become stage musicals Image by David Mark from PixabayFilm Musicals TodayIf, as mentioned at the start of this article, the goal of film musicals was to bring the genre to the wider public, the experiment has met with astounding success.Anyone who belts out ‘Go The Distance’ (Hercules, 1997) when they need inspiration or Hakuna Matata when they are happy is unwittingly giving testimony to how pervasive the Broadway musical has become.Speaking of Broadway theatres…Recently, we’ve seen a reversal in the order which shows are put on and produced. Rather than a new musical finding success on stage and then being made into a film, cinema audiences are the first to see new musicals. Fans of radio are simultaneously treated to hit songs from the film. And then, the music and lyrics play out on stage, generally to a more limited audience than the film. We’re not talking only Disney films, here; it’s many different types of musicals.Think of the 2016 Hollywood film La La Land, for instance… but clearly, Disney fare takes the lead. The Lion King stage show was a sensation and Frozen drew rave reviews. The irony is that, while some would not be caught dead attending a Disney film premiere, catching the Broadway debut of Frozen would be a feather in one’s social cap.But then, all of those statistics could give no reflection on anyone who gets tickets. Statistics show that close to half of all West End theatre tickets are sold to tourists…Perhaps only film musicals will survive, and maybe that’s a good thing. No need to wait for a Fair Lady revival to tour the country; just pop down to your nearest video rental outlet â€" or, better yet, stream it from your preferred digital service. Now, your musical theatre questions answered: what is a revue musical?

3 Reasons to not use your Job Title when Networking

Introvert Whisperer / 3 Reasons to not use your Job Title when Networking 3 Biggest Reasons to Not Use Your Job Title When Networking and What To Do Instead Networking- Hopefully, by this point, you realize that you need to be meeting and expanding your network all the time.   It doesn’t matter if you are doing a job search or happily enmeshed in your best job ever, your network requires your attention â€" all the time. Your network is a living organism and by it’s very nature, there will be people who will spin out of your orbit for a whole variety of reasons.   That means you need to be continuously meeting new people. It doesn’t matter if those new people you meet are at a neighborhood party or a professional association meeting, your self-introduction needs to be effective and memorable.   While the thing we all gravitate to is our job title, it doesn’t mean it’s the best way to meet a new person. I’d like to outline the reasons not to use your job title in support of what will work so much better: Incomprehensible â€" Most job titles mean almost nothing to people outside your place of work. Some job titles are so cryptic; they leave you wondering where the decoder ring is.   Don’t make others have to play “20 questions” just to figure out your work. It’s not good conversation â€" After hearing a job title, it’s often hard to take the conversation anywhere. It’s like hitting a road barrier, it’s abrupt and does nothing to help you both move the conversation forward. WIIFM (What’s In It For Me) â€" We are constantly in search of useful resources that can either help us or help others we know. Memory for something has to have an emotion tied to it. A job title doesn’t do that which means it won’t be memorable. Bonus reason â€" It’s boring and predictable. While it will take a bit of thought to substitute a way of introduction, once you’ve done it a few times, it will also become second nature to you. Instead, do this: Frame your results â€" While you do produce numerous results, pick out 1 or 2 results that you obtain. When you frame your introduction in results, people will understand and relate it to them. The thought is if you can get those results for your employer or customer, you can do it for others. It starts to appeal to the WIIFM part in all of us. It’s also more descriptive that a job title. Powerful verbs or actions â€" As part of how your phrase your introduction using your results, think about how you achieve those results. Do you teach? Sell? Manage? Coach?   If you’re kind of clueless on some good verbs, simply Google “powerful verbs”, you’ll get great lists to pick what works for you. Rinse, repeat practice â€" Because you have several results and verbs you can come up with multiple introductions and that works well. If one combination doesn’t really feel comfortable then use a different combination.   Once you have a few that work for you, practice them so you’ll remember them.   You will find that you’ll end up with a couple that will become your “go-to” introductions. Keep in mind you are building a new habit.   It may feel awkward at first just like riding a bike. It takes practice but will pay off with everyone you meet from now on.
